## Hash is the plant's resin glands, separated from the flower. What kief, dry sift, ice water hash and full melt are, how each is used, how we wash ours, and what's on the shelf.

## What Is Hash?

Hash is the resin of the cannabis plant, the tiny glands called trichomes, separated from the flower and are collected. It's the oldest concentrate there is, many are familiar with Temple Balls which are collected hash from cured and dried flower. Every kind of hash is just a different way of getting trichomes off the plant: shake them off dry and you have kief, wash them off in ice water and you have ice water hash, press that under heat and you have rosin. We do the washing and pressing ourselves, which is why this page exists.

## What is kief?

Sprinkle it on a bowl, roll it into a joint, or press a pinch between your fingers until it holds together as a coin to be smoked. A dry-herb vaporizer handles kief well at a low temperature. A pinch is plenty; it's concentrated, and a bowl with a kief cap is a different evening from the bowl without. Don't try to dab loose kief; it has too much plant material and burns rather than melts due to a high amount of plant material left after processing.

## Ice water hash

Ice water hash starts with flower frozen the day it was cut, at [Bountiful Farms](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/#) we set timers to get the harvested flower into the freezer in minutes, this preserves as much of the flavor and potency of the trichomes as possible.

The frozen flower is agitated in ice water, which makes the trichomes brittle enough to break off and sink; the water is poured through mesh bags of different micron sizes, which sort the trichomes by size. The collected hash is then freeze-dried. No solvent touches it at any point, hence the term solventless concentrate. The bags are why you'll see numbers like 73u or 90u on a jar: that's the size of the trichome heads that were collected; Bountiful Farms premium rosin is a 90u-159u collection, which we believe is the best possible collection for high-quality and flavorful hash rosin.

### Full melt, and what the stars mean

Full melt is the top grade: ice water hash so clean it melts completely on a hot surface like a dab rig or E-rig and leaves nothing behind, that level of full melt would be considered five- and six-star rating. It's rare because only a few strains wash that clean, and it's priced like it. Lower grades are still excellent hash; they go on bowls, into joints, or under the press to become rosin. Bountiful Farms currently has strains like [Southern Hashpitality](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/products/flower/southern-hashpitality) and [Purple Mercury](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/products/flower/purple-mercury) that can produce high-quality full melt that are for sale in limited editions at our Retail locations in [Framingham](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/shop/framingham?dtche%5Bcategory%5D=concentrates) and [Rowley](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/shop/rowley?dtche%5Bcategory%5D=concentrates) MA, as well as with select partners. We are regularly doing research and development with new genetics to find other candidates for full melt options.

**Hash vs rosin**

Press water hash between heated plates and the resin runs out as rosin. Same trichomes, same strain, different form: hash is the raw glands, rosin is the oil squeezed out of them. Most of what we wash becomes [rosin](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/products/concentrates/solventless) because rosin is easier to use in a pen or on a rig and is the most commonly used form of hash currently in the state of Massachusetts.

**What we wash, and what's on the shelf**

Bountiful Farms stocks and produces multiple types and lines of Rosin:

[_Premium Hash Rosin_](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/shop/framingham?dtche%5Bbrands%5D=bountiful-farms&dtche%5Bweight%5D=1g&dtche%5Bcategory%5D=concentrates): This is what we are most known for and has earned us multiple awards over the years including NECANN Boston 2025 1st place solventless concentrate & Best in Show as well as 1st place and best overall in the Baystate Jar Test hosted by U4EA Farms. This product is a 90-159 micron 1st wash only; many consider this the highest quality collection of trichomes for the most flavorful and potent rosin.

Full Melt: though more limited in availability Bountiful Farms has been able to regularly bring true full melt rosin to the MA market, we are one of the few producers who has been able to confidently offer a product that is true high-quality full melt.

Rosin Jam: This product is a cold cure rosin that has been exposed to low heat for longer, changing the texture into something more, well, 'Jammy'. This product though more difficult to work with because of its thinner and stickier texture often has a bolder & fuller flavor.

[_Thumbprints_](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/shop/framingham?dtche%5Bbrands%5D=bountiful-farms&dtche%5Bweight%5D=2g&dtche%5Bcategory%5D=concentrates): These are creative products that combine 1g of cold cure Rosin; which is your classic badder like textured with a center of hash rosin jam. This allows for the best of both worlds, ease of working with a dab tool of the cold cure hash rosin, and the flavor potency of rosin jam. This also allows our hash team to get creative with intentional pairings of different strains in the same jar.

[_Blends:_](https://www.bountifulfarms.care/shop/framingham?dtche%5Bbrands%5D=blends&dtche%5Bweight%5D=1g&dtche%5Bcategory%5D=concentrates) Blends is a new line released by Bountiful Farms in 2026. This rosin is a full spectrum product that our teams have intentionally combined strains during the wash process to produce highly desired flavor profiles. Because of these combined washes we are able to pass savings along to the customer and offer these units as a lower price. The goal of the line was to offer high-quality solventless concentrates to consumers at a more affordable price.
## FAQs
Q: Is hash stronger than flower?
A:
Yes, two to five times stronger, depending on grade. Be sure to dose accordingly, start with small amounts.

Q: Can you smoke hash in a joint?
A:
Yes, you can crumble bubble hash and Kief into the flower itself before rolled. Or you can try what people call "hash-holes" and role a thin strand of cold curerosin and place in the center of your flower and then roll as you would normally.

Q: Why is rosin more expensive than other concentrates?
A:
The primary reason is yield. When fresh frozen flower is washed with a solvent/chemical the yield to finished concentrate is much higher than rosin. The other is labor, process and input material. Many concentrates can be made with shake and trim flower, while high-quality rosin requires the starting material must also be high-quality and full bud flower. The average menu price for Bountiful Farms rosin in $32/g to $40/g.

Q: Why is full melt the most expensive?
A:

A pound of flower gives up a few grams of top-grade hash, and only some strains wash that clean. You're paying for the yield. Just as rosin yields less than other concentrates, only a fraction of that yield can be considered a full melt quality.
